Sparking Brilliance on the Airwaves: 5 Tips to Ace Your Podcast Interview

No doubt, preparation is key, whether you’re the interviewer or the interviewee. Here are some valuable tips to ensure you shine as a podcast guest:

Podcast Guest Basics

1. Turn Up… Every Time. Basic but crucial. Show up for your scheduled podcast interview. Life happens, and if something comes up, communicate promptly. Value the time invested by both parties.

2. Get Some Decent Gear. Invest in a good quality USB microphone and a reliable mic stand. Ensure your setup is ready on your most-used desk for easy access to great audio quality. Optimal lighting is crucial for podcast guest appearances that include video, utilize natural light, position multiple lights to reduce shadows, avoid overhead lighting, maintain consistent color temperature, incorporate diffusion for a softer look, add background lighting for separation, and avoid mixed lighting for a cohesive and professional appearance.

3. Be in a Good Location. Choose a quiet, private space for recording. Avoid public places and opt for rooms with minimal background noise. Consider creating a designated recording spot at home for consistency.

4. Go Short and Give Options. Keep your answers concise. Encourage dynamic back-and-forth with the host. Summarize and ask the host’s opinion on topics to delve into.

5. Offer Obvious Takeaways & Homework Provide 1 or 2 practical ideas for listeners to implement immediately. Share actionable tasks that solidify the learning from the interview.
